Purpose

  • A conventional pneumatic gripper is re-designed to save space. Capable of gripping a work piece by means of a cylinders thrust, using as few items as possible.

Points for use

  • A structure in which the gripper closes in the direction of the cylinder instroke.
  • The claw is fastened to the arm using bolts, this allows easy replacement and substitution of various arms.

Target workpiece

  • Stainless steel round rod.
  • Dimensions: φ 33 mm x 120 mm
  • Mass: 800g

    • Conditional values: Operating air pressure P = 0.5MPa, instroke pressure receiving area A = 378 mm² (catalogue value), distance between cylinder side link and fulcrum (hinge pin) L1 = 67.3mm, distance between fulcrum and workpiece center L2 = 97.1mm, required gripping force F2 = 7.85N
    • Thrust to be found F0 [N] = P x A Thus, F0 = 0.5 x 378 = 189N
    • Required gripping force converted into the cylinder side: F1 [N] = F2 x L2/L1 Thus, F1 = 7.85 x 97.1/ 67.3 = 11.3N
    • Safety factor: 189/11.3 ≒ 16.7

Other Design Consideration

  • Unlike conventional pneumatic grippers, this gripper securely holds workpieces with the cylinder's thrust.
  • Depending on the design of the brackets, this gripper can be installed at any direction.
  • A cover is used at the arm part for mounting the claw to prevent foreign materials from entering the link mechanism of the gripper.
