Purpose

  • A block that is shaped to match the workpiece is used with a knurled screw to hold the workpiece. A spring is used to eliminate the backlash

    Backlash is the clearance or lost motion in the holding mechanism caused by gaps between the parts.

  • Adhesive is applied to the workpiece before it is set in the jig. The jig holds the parts together for the required adhesion period (8 hours).

    • Assumed deflection during operation: x = 7.3mm (3.3mm when set, 4mm when stroking)
    • A spring with k = (1.8 - 0.49)/7.3 = 0.18N/mm is selected.

    • Assumed deflection when pressure is applied: x = 8mm (4mm when set, 4mm when stroking)
